Population Statistics
The Shire of Broome is the Kimberley region’s largest population centre with an estimated resident population of 14,436 (Preliminary estimate based on the 2006 Census of Population and Housing. Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics). Broome is an internationally recognised tourist destination with an ever-increasing number of visitors flocking to Broome each year. During the peak tourist season, (June to August) Broome’s population swells to over 45,000 per month with visitors travelling to Broome to enjoy the fine warm days of the dry season.
Broome’s major industries include tourism, pearling, fishing, aquaculture, pastoral and horticulture. Other important economic industries in the region are mining and exploration of the Kimberley, and agriculture. It is predicted that continued expansion of these sectors could generate more economic growth for the region and bring greater employment opportunities.
The Kimberley Development Commission, in partnership with the Department for Local Government and Regional Development, has produced the 2006 Kimberley Economic Perspective. TOURISM
In recent years Broome has become a high profile tourism destination. This trend has emerged on the back of improved and expanded air access, with an outcome of this trend being increased room availability due to the completion of new accommodation developments.
Broome’s tourism industry is largely seasonal with peak visitor activity between April and October each year with most visitors originating from interstate and other regions inside Western Australia. The estimated annual visitor numbers for the Shire of Broome is 239,000 (Source Tourism Research Australia International Visitor Survey 7 National Visitor Survey).
